Weightloss: Diet or Exercise

Obesity has become one of the most common diseases of people from all over the world regardless their age, sex or nationality. Not only does it influence the way people look, but also extracts a toll from their general health and well-being. Obviously, weight gain results from health problems, lack of physical activities and unbalanced diet, so to have a slim body, one should lead a healthy lifestyle. Most doctors would recommend to both exercise and eat less to achieve a desirable result, but practice shows that a good diet is much more effective than spending hours in a gym.

First of all, one has to remember about the origin of extra weight – it comes when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns. Even if a person does not spend all the day sitting at the computer, he or she probably consumes considerably more food than human organism needs under normal conditions. Usually, not very many people realize that they eat some product not because of hunger, but rather for pleasure. However, it is not only the amount of consumed food that makes one’s figure look worse, but its quality, as well. It is a well-known fact that fast food, sugar, alcohol, etc. do more harm than good, and endless exercising will never compensate for such products. Next, cutting back on calories does not necessarily involve changing eating habits beyond recognition – making a diet balanced and nutritious is all that is needed. In reality, reducing portions’ sizes or eating less calorie food means cutting approximately 500 calories per day, while trying to burn them in a gym is a daunting challenge.

When choosing between an exercise or a diet, it is also vital to remember that there are some categories of people for whom excessive physical activity is not appropriate. If a person has a heart disease or some limb injury, exercises may be very dangerous. Moreover, if a person is unaware of his or her health problems, putting additional strain to a body will only exacerbate the situation. In this case, regular jogging or jumping on a rope to burn some hundred calories is not an option. A balanced diet, on the other hand, will not only favor weight loss, but will have a positive effect on a person’s health state. Actually, extra weight is caused by a poor dieting and not by the lack of additional physical activities. One would not have anything to burn if no extra calories were consumed, after all.

Apart from physiological factors which make working out less effective, there is also a psychological one. Anyone who has ever exercised will confirm that burning extra calories takes considerably more time and effort than gaining them. A person will have to spend a couple of hours in a gym to compensate for that “tiny cake”, and one may simply have not enough willpower to sacrifice so much time and effort to exercising. Moreover, some people argue that exercising gives them enormous appetite, so the chances are high that all the calories may be regained after coming back home. In addition, exercising alone will not produce a good long-term effect. If a person is not fan of physical activities and does them only to lose weight, it will be gained again as long as he or she stops exercising. This also happens when a person forgets about any food restrictions and returns to eating everything he or she desires, of course, but once your body gets used to “good” food, you probably will not want to consume all the greasy, extremely sweet and poor products which, in reality, give a sick feeling in a stomach.

To sum up, I believe that dieting is much more effective than exercising and there are many reasons for that. Firstly, a person will be in shape without efforts if he or she does not consume extra calories. Secondly, unlike physical activities, a balanced diet is a solution which fits everyone, no matter what their health problems are. Finally, it is psychologically and physically easier to restrain from eating high-caloric food than spending a couple of hours working out to stay in shape.
