This occurs when genetic interaction in an offspring results in expression of a physical characteristic that is outside the range defined by both parents.  It usually happens when the heterozygote has a great phenotype as compared to either of its parents.  The most common case of over dominance occurs in the alleles that code for sickle cell anemia (Levine, 2004).
