Islam

Morality is derived from the Latin word “moralita” which means character or proper behavior. Morality is a code of conduct, which a person, group of persons, or the society authoritative hold with high regard (Solahudin, 2008).

Islam is a comprehensive religion. In Islam, morality is a major cornerstone. Muslims believe that one major cause of the fall of a nation is immorality; they approach morality with high regard. In Islam, there are a number of fundamental rights that have been put in place to make sure that morality and ethics are observed (Abou, 2006). These fundamental rights are followed irrespective of the situation. In Islam, there are provisions, most of them being legal, which ensure that the moral systems are effective (Muṭahharī & Limba, 2011).

The moral systems in Islam not only define morality, but also give strict guidelines that human beings are expected to follow so that they can achieve morality (Bouhdiba, Dawalibi, & Unesco,1998). There are guidelines to help both individuals and the society to achieve morality.

Basic Principles

Islam strongly believes that God is the sole creator of the world and the universe. For this reason, Muslim’s moral system is strongly rooted in their primary creed where they believe in one God who single-handed created the universe and sustains it. From this perspective, Islam believes that the purpose of human beings in the universe is to worship God (Bukhārī, & Ḥāmid, 2003). They believe that they can do this by living in harmony and using the Divine Will. They believe that by doing this, they will achieve peace in the world and subsequent success that never ends even in the afterlife. They look up to the Qur’an, which guides them on morality issues. According to Al-Qur’an 2:177, Islam advocates for living righteously with all people and ensuring sincerity to everybody. They believe that God is omniscient; therefore, there is a need for people to have show moral behavior every time and under all circumstances. This is because although one can deceive the world, they cannot do so to the creator (Metcalf, 1984). This shows that Islam holds morality in very high regards in terms of its basic principles.

Individual Morality

An Al Amal Assalih is also known as the virtuous deeds guiding Muslim’s behavior. Islam emphasizes on humility before God, human beings, and strict accountability to the creator (Devji, 2005). According to Islam, every individual is required to have strict control over their passions and desires. According to Al Qu’ran 26: 88-89, people who exercise excess attachment to material values and pleasures of the world are bound to vanish. The religion urges all human beings to cut off all their earthly desires and material things and instead live in accordance with the will of God (Haddad, 1997). Among the attributes that are required from a Muslim, there are charity, showing gratitude, being patient, and having the courage to stand for the truth. Charity is explicitly shown by the Zakah, which is held annually.

Morality in the Society

The argument that immorality in the society is the major cause of its decline shows how Islam regards societal morality. This means that Islam cares a lot about the moral health of the people in the community. Everything that would lead to the welfare of the people in the society and is said to be morally good is good (Birgivı, & Bayrak, 2005).

Conclusion

In Islam, morality makes reference to almost all the aspects in the life of a Muslim from the most basic level of life and interaction to the highest levels of leadership and international relations (Antony, 2013). A Muslim is not expected to do any evil but always be virtuous.
