Love is one of the major themes in the novel History of Love. In the novel, Zvi believes that Leo is dead, and Zvi helps in bringing the magical book into the orbit of people's lives. The book finally results to the naming of Alma Singer and her subsequent knowing her origins. The concepts of love normally control how people relate to one another and the actions that they carry out. Therefore, these concepts control human life largely. This paper examines how the concept of love affects people.

Although people rely on the concept of love in their daily activities, it is difficult to define the concept of love. The concept of love is normally related to attitude and experience. The term love is used to mean a certain type of attitude that is normally held by an individual towards another one, and it involves a predisposition of thinking, feeling, and behaving in a certain way towards a person. Love is an imperative concept since it affects the feelings of people that, in turn, affect their achievements. Love is what determines happiness and sadness of people (Codde 43). Love is closely related to the concept of peace. Peace among people comes about due to the concept of love. In addition, love affects the feelings of individuals towards others. Love also affects the depth and the breadth of information that is exchanged. In casual relationships, the acquaintances normally exchange sketchy information, but in intimate relationships, people normally share profound information that relate to each other’s personal histories, weaknesses, values, fears, and idiosyncrasies (Codde 44). Therefore, the more intimate people are, the more information they are willing to share.

In addition, love is what determines the ability of people to share and the value of the goods shared. Love is what makes people happy or sad and as love grows between people, the more the value of the rewards and punishments increases. For example, in the novel, Leo is very sad due to his separation from the people he loves (Krauss 25). In addition, people are normally willing to invest more of their resources in intimate relationships than casual ones. Love is also imperative in the modern world since it determines the empathy that people have for their partners. For example, a father can be joyful about success and happiness of his child, while a wife may experience distress when her husband is denied the hoped-for opportunity.

Love and intimacy have been considered to be among the basic human needs. In the novel, Alma and her young brother Bird are seen trying to cope with the loss of their father whom they loved. The presence of a close, loving and tender relationship normally makes people feel better both physically and emotionally in their day-to-day activities. In most cases, intimacy that is reflected in passionate love and companionate love normally has a beneficial effect on both men and women, which is positively related to the physical and mental health. Moreover, the lack of love has the opposite in that it can harm both the physical and the mental health.

Love makes people feel inclined towards others and develop a feeling of being close to the people they like all the time, which is the reason why a girl leaves her parents to go and live with her husband. In situations like this, people love others due to their financial stability, but when they become poor, they disappear and look for other people who have money.

When people lack love, they end up developing loneliness, which is the experience that happens when a person’s social relationships are considered deficient in some important way. For example, in the book History of Love, Leo Gursky believes that he is nearing the end of his life when he lives alone in a small apartment in Manhattan. Leo does not have any friends, and as a result, he develops loneliness that makes him give up on living. The concept of love is imperative since it determines the productivity of an individual in one way or another; love can also affect an individual both physically and emotionally.
