The USA have always been interested in the Caribbean region. The United States have influenced most Caribbean nations since the enactment of Monroe Doctrine in 1823. Currently, all Caribbean islands are independent, except for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Both of them are under the authority of the USA.

The USA has close relations with Puerto Rico. The country is the unincorporated territory of America. The government of Puerto Rico is subject to the US Congress (Rogozinski, 2000).

The USA closely interact with the British Virgin Islands. The islands are frequently visited by the US citizens. In addition, 18 % of privately owned land at the islands belong to the Americans.

In 1917, the United States bought the US Virgin Islands. The USVI are classified as the unincorporated territory of the USA. The US Virgin Islands import almost all food from the USA. The USVI companies export textiles, electronic devices, and pharmaceuticals.

The relations between the USA and Cuba have specific features. At the very beginning of the 20^th century, the Platt Amendment resolved that the USA was allowed to control Cuba. Everything changed in 1959 when Fidel Castro came into power. He nationalized all private companies and highly taxed American products (Sullivan, 2005). In its turn, the Eisenhower Administration imposed trade restrictions on all Cuban goods. In 1961, the two countries cut all diplomatic relations. They used Switzerland as a mediator in their communication.

The US government assists the Caribbean region in the development of its trade market. The American export to the Caribbean region has risen up to $10.1 billion in 2004 in comparison with $8.9 billion in 2001. The US government believes that the Free Trade Area of the Americas(FTAA) will liberalize their trade relations and improve economic activity in the region.

Generally, the current US-Caribbean relations suit both the American and the Caribbean residents. Many Caribbean people have gotten advanced education, highly-paid jobs, and citizenship in the USA. In their turn, the residents of America can freely visit different tourism centers in the Caribbean region.

The US-Caribbean relations have a lot of advantages such as improvement of living standards, development of commercial institutions and educational programs, export growth.

The US foreign policy toward the Caribbean region involves the approval of the Caribbean policy of regionalism, providing security procedures and medical aid.

The recommendations to improve the US-Caribbean relations are as follows: the development of closer relations, improvement of the sea routes and land transport, raising the level of human capital by initiating public and private partnerships.
